We then continue our drive to Likir Monastery, founded in the 11th century and later re-established in the 15th century. This beautiful monastery belongs to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism and is known for its impressive 23-metre-high golden statue of Maitreya Buddha (Future Buddha), which sits majestically against the backdrop of barren mountains and blue skies. The monastery houses ancient manuscripts, thangkas, and beautiful statues of deities, offering insights into Ladakh's deep-rooted Buddhist traditions.
