After a short rest, begin your sightseeing with the striking Khmer-style Royal Palace complex, established in 1866 by King Norodom’s predecessors. Nearby stands the Silver Pagoda, also known as the Emerald Buddha Temple, displaying countless Buddha statues crafted from gold, silver, diamond, and gemstones. Continue to the Independence Monument, then visit the National Museum – a classic example of Khmer architecture showcasing more than 5,000 artifacts made of bronze, wood, copper, sandstone, gold, and silver. Pass along the scenic riverfront park where four rivers, including the mystical Mekong, converge. Climb the sacred hill Phnom Daun Penh, the site that gave the capital its name. End the day at the Central Market, an art-deco style market designed by French architect Louis Chauchon in 1937, featuring a central dome and sprawling hallways filled with shops and stalls. Once the notorious S-21 Security Office under the Khmer Rouge regime, it served as the main center for interrogation and execution of those accused of opposing the regime. After breakfast, meet your guide and begin the day exploring Angkor Thom, the 12th-century fortified royal city and the last capital of the Angkor Empire. Enter through the South Gate with its striking statues symbolizing the Churning of the Ocean of Milk. Continue to Bayon Temple, famed for its 54 towers adorned with more than 200 serene faces of Avalokiteshvara. Walk through the Royal Enclosure, Elephant Terrace, and Terrace of the Leper King. Conclude the morning at Ta Prohm Temple, where ancient roots of giant trees intertwine with the stone ruins, creating a mystical atmosphere.
In the afternoon, tour the Grand Circuit temples. Start at Preah Khan, known as the "Sacred Sword," with its long corridors and intricate carvings.
